About Feathers
Feathers are formed with  keratin proteins ( fibrous structural proteins). In birds  scales, beaks, claws and feathers  contain β-keratin. There are two basic types of feathers called vaned feathers and down feathers. vaned feathers  cover the exterior of the body. Down feathers are underneath the vaned feathers.
The colors of feathers are produced by pigments, by microscopic structures that can refract, reflect, or scatter selected wavelengths of light, or by a combination of both.
Birds bathe regularly, and use their beak to rearrange the feather in the right shape. This is called preening.
